What is a passing grade in UM Dearborn? ›

After grades are submitted, the Registrar's Office translates P/F grades as follows: A+ through C- = Pass (P) D+ through E = Fail (F)

Usually, most universities grant a pass for any grade higher than a D. Certain universities may only consider grades higher than a C- as passing.

U.S. Letter Grading System: The standard grading system in the U.S. uses letters A to F, with A being the highest (90-100%) and D being the lowest passing grade (60-69%).

The normal grading range is from 55 to 100. The number grades correspond to letter grades as reflected in the chart below. The minimum passing grade is 70 (C). Any grades between 55 and 69 (D and F) are considered failing grades for which unit credit is not earned.

Letter grades are assigned as follows:

A+ = 97-100% A = 93-97% A- = 90-92%

A 3.9 GPA, or Grade Point Average, is equivalent to a A- letter grade on a 4.0 GPA scale, and a percentage grade of 90–92.

Failing a course may be a setback, but it is not necessarily a disastrous one. Students who have failed can go on to pass re-sits and still graduate with a good degree.

A grade of “C-” through “A+” in a course elected on a pass/fail basis is considered passing and will be recorded as “P” (pass—for credit toward the degree and no effect on the grade point average).

Grade Value–The numerical value assigned to a grade: A+ = 4 points, A = 4 points, A- = 3.7 points, B+ = 3.3 points, B = 3 points, B- = 2.7 points, C+ = 2.3 points, C = 2 points, *C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3 points, D = 1 point, D- = . 7 points and F = 0 points.

If you fail a class, you'll get a 0 on your transcript — and that can bring down your GPA.
