1. THE NUMBERING SYSTEMS USED
(i) The number at the start of the line indicates his order of descent from
the initial couple "0 0-Thomas Augustine MALONE (1824)" and
"sp-Louisa CHILDS". (The "sp-" is for spouse.) So his ID is 0 & those of their chn are 1,2,3,… For example their second child has ID 2:
2 1-Austin James MALONE who married sp-Jessie TRIMBLE.
The third child of "2" Austin and spouse Jessie has ID"23":
23 2-Ellie MALONE (1903) who married sp-John HANHAM, and so on.
(ii) The generation number precedes the name.
For example the "1-" in

(iii) To make this descendancy chart look like a conventional family tree,
you need to put all the pages of the tree together as one vertical sheet,
then turn it on its side with the left margin at the top. Now draw horizontal
lines between all siblings. The top line will join all the 1-, that is 1,..,5.
The next line will join all the 2- but be broken so as not to cover any 1-.
So it is in 2 parts: the first part joins 21, 22, 23 and the second joins 31,
32, ..., 38. The 3rd line joins all the 3- and breaks whenever a 1- or 2- occurs.
The 4th line joins all the 4- and breaks whenever a 1- or 2- or 3- occurs. And so on.

connected with Thomas Augustine MALONE an individual who, for a time
was associated with and employed by WHF TALBOT.
I note that you go on to state that MALONE family descendants do
still hold some surviving correspondence from WHF Talbot. If so this
is, for me, a very important discovery. We hold, at the Fox Talbot
Museum 40 letters from TA MALONE to WHF TALBOT and I do know of the
location and whereabouts of a few others.
We would be extremely interest to discover if it is possible to
obtain copies of any of the outgoing material from TA Malone to WHF

dr of Col. Robert TRIMBLE & Jane HEYWOOD -CH. Her father was Lord Mayor of
Manchester in the 1860s and 1870s. There is a statue of him outside the Town Hall in Manchester. A copy of a letter written by Col. MALONE to his sister after Austin died states that Austin "hadn't a very joyful life" and that he would give 10/- a week to Jessie because Jessie had refused help from her own family.
Her sister Nora was neighbour to the ADNAMS family on Norfolk Rd,
Inglewood, New Plymouth. The ADNAMS are related to Ida WITHERS, 2nd
wife of Col. MALONE (ID 3 below). Their 1915 home - a 1906 kauri cottage
at 180 Old Titirangi Road- is being restored in 2003 by the family of
Lynton DIGGLE ph/fax 09 817 8459.

Malone was educated at Wellington College from 1941 to 1944,[2] Victoria University College (1946–1947), the University of Otago (1948) and the University of Sydney. He graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science.
Veterinarian
From 1952 to 1957 Malone worked as a veterinary surgeon in Brightwater near Nelson, and from 1957 to 1986 in Nelson. He also served on the New Zealand Hydatids Council and took particular interest in bovine tuberculosis.
Malone owned a 1947 Auster JB1 Aiglet, ZK-BWH, and used it for access to the remotest parts of the Nelson District in what was probably New Zealand's first "flying vet" service.
Malone had initially leased the Auster from the Nelson Aero Club, but about 1960 bought it used it for the next 21 years. In 1981, when Mayor of Nelson, Malone donated the aircraft to the RNZAF Museum at Wigram.[3]
Politics
Malone was a National Party supporter and unsuccessfully stood in the 1963 and 1978 general elections and 1976 by-election as the National Party Nelson electorate candidate. He also stood in 1975 for the Tasman electorate.
In 1974 Malone was elected to the Nelson City Council and served as a Councillor from 1974 to 1980 and then as Mayor from 1980 to 1992.
Malone was appointed a justice of the peace in 1980, an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the veterinary profession, in the 1982 Queen's Birthday Honours,[4] and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to local government and the community, in the 2000 New Year Honours.[5]
He was also Chair of the Network Tasman Trust from 1995 until 2005 when he was forced to quit after being diagnosed with a rare nerve disorder, trigeminal neuralgia. This is a condition where severe pain can be triggered by such simple actions as brushing your teeth or touching your face, or even a slight breeze. Malone was quoted as saying: "At its worst even trying to talk or eat is extremely painful, and the drugs to try and knock that so you can live reasonably leave you drugged, as it were."[6]

MALONE is one of NZ's great heroes. He refused to let his men be used as cannon
fodder by his English superiors. Because of this, when he finally won the
objective at Gallipoli, the hill Chunuk Bair - at the cost of his own life,
he was not awarded a medal. Now his stance against his superiors is seen
as NZ's coming of age, and Wellington's Evening Post of 25.7.1991 records
how Parliament may award him finally his posthumous medal. MP Jim ANDERTON's bill on this is still languishing in committee over 2 years later!

EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE HONOUR (POSTHUMOUS RECOGNITION) BILL
Introduction
JIM ANDERTON (Sydenham): I move, That leave be given to introduce the
Exceptional Service Honour (Posthumous Recognition) Bill. The
honouring of citizens who have given exceptional service to the people
of this country is part of the way we create and continue
tradition. It is a way of publicly reminding our community of the kind
of conduct we as New Zealanders value. It establishes role models,
some might say heroes---people who have gone above and beyond the call
of ordinary citizenship and duty. Whether that be soldiers who put
their lives at exceptional risk for their comrades and country, or
citizens whose life work gives exceptional value to our society. In
general we honour those who care and do for their people rather than
those who selfishly line their own pockets, however successful that
might be. In New Zealand we have blended our heritage of the peoples
who came to these pacific islands and made them their home. As a young
nation we are still working through that blend, establishing our
identity, and working out who are our honoured citizens and what
conduct we value. We are constantly moving forward, developing, and
changing as a vibrant nation must, but we must also take with us our
past. A people that have no history are not a people, they are a
rudderless ship waiting to be swept by whatever current pulls or wind
blows. The vagaries of our political process tend to increase the idea
of a rudderless ship of State. A 3-year time-span governs our view of
the future, and history is only that which the voters can reasonably
remember. In the honouring process those who are the flavour of the
short-term political memory of the week, month, or year, might
justifiably find their place in our nation's recognition, but given
the concentration on the present we should not be surprised if there
are some for whom a longer memory is needed - some who might have
stood against the currents and winds of the inoment, indeed, some who
may have nobly offended political masters in the greater service of
the nation. As we look back with the wisdom of history it seems to me
that we should be able to say to our young nation that here was a
person who gave to his or her people and country, perhaps who died for
them. The politics of the day might not have valued that service then
but we recognise it now. For those who need to think about this in
concrete rather than abstract terms I have in mind one example---the
outstanding gallantry of Lieutenant Colonel MALONE. I should like to
quote from a small section of the fine history of Gallipoli, THE NEW
ZEALAND STORY by Christopher PUGSLEY. It is about the assault on
Chunuk Bair, and it reads as follows:
"The Auckland batallion had advanced 100 metres along the length of a
narrow ridge from one knoll to the next. It was a repeat of the
slaughter of the light horse at the neck. Some 300 men fell dead or
wounded. Grant was mortally wounded. The survivors either stayed on
the apex or crouched in a shallow Turkish trench some 18 inches deep
that cut across the narrow pinnacle slightly above the saddle of land
leading to Chunuk Bair. To move was to die. Between them, groaning and
crying in the sun, lay half the batallion. Snipers fired at any
movement and the wounded who survived provided a muted chorus all
through the day and into the night. Throughout the attack Brigadier
JOHNSTON stood on the crest of Rhododendron Ridge cheering his men
on. He had to be removed almost by force by his staff. It appears he
now directed the Wellington infantry batallion to make another attempt
and ordered that half the Canterbury infantry move forward to the apex
to support this renewed attack. Colonel MALONE refused. In the crowded
conditions on the apex there was no privacy and MALONE's discussion
with his brigadier and brigade major took place amongst the men.
Charlie CLARK, the bushman, a corporal in the Wellington infantry
was one of those. 'So Wellington batallion was called to go up so
these two colonels and Colonel MALONE had a big.row over it.' MALONE
said: 'My men are not going over in daylight but they will go over at
night time and they will take that hill.'. So he said: 'Wellington
batallion come away from the ridge, and so we did.' Colonel MALONE
said: 'I will take the risk and any punishment. These men are not
going until I order them to go. I am not going to send them over to
commit suicide.' JOHNSON reported the failure of the attempt to take
Chunuk Bair and GODLEY, that is General GODLEY a British general,
agreed to delay any further attempt until nightfall.''
All nations pass through some point in their history when they come
of age. No one who reads about the colonial period of New Zealand's
history could fail to be staggered by the comparison with attitudes
prevailing today at just how dependent, subservient is not too
strong a description, New Zealanders were to everything British. Home
as they used to call it was an island of similar size to our own
12,000 miles away. For me the precise moment of truth about our own
identity as a nation and the unique spirit we had developed as New
Zealanders occurred on the stark and bloodied hills of
Gallipoli. There a New Zealand Army commander, Lieutenant Colonel
William MALONE, defied what he considered to be suicidal orders from
both his British and New Zealand superiors. He refused to sacrifice
New Zealand soldiers on the altar of inflexible military theory and
used his troops to capture a vital strategic height of the peninsula
called Chunuk Bair after a brilliant New Zealand effort through
the night. He and most of his troops were killed or wounded. Only 76
of 700 men in the Wellington regiment were not killed or wounded. He
himself was reputed to have been killed by British naval gunfire, a
final irony given that it was the British who were supposed to
reinforce the hill. But in any event he was never honoured for a
magnificent feat of arms and, in fact, he was blamed for what was
clearly a failure of tactics or nerve on the part of the British
reinforcements.
Because of military convention and precedent regarding posthumous
honours, if we are ever to honour New Zealanders like Colonel MALONE,
and in my view they should be honoured, we will have to find a
creative way to do so. My private member's Bill will, I hope, be such
an attempt. It is long overdue. What difference will an award make,
the House might ask. In the scale of current concern about the economy
and the political survival of a Government, perhaps not a great deal,
but it will count for the family and for those who know that a brave
man gave his life for his country and was pillaried by the
establishment of the day for his courage. It will tell all New
Zealanders that we honour his conduct. Turning to the specifics of
this award, obviously it is somewhat unusual. Crown honours are not
awarded posthumously so an Act of parliament is necessary. We might be
accused of dredging up ancient history when we should be building the
economy and society of the future, but I should hope that the element
of importance in the Bill---the recognition of great service to New
Zealand---will be agreed to by all. That said, we obviously do not
want to have something that is a back door to reopening every person's
career in the past 150 years or more. This will be a rare honour and I
imagine that the circumstances when a recommendation is made will be
few. The mechanism of hearing submissions and making recominendations
will be an important matter to discuss and, possibly, improve at the
select committee stage. The Bill has suggested a process by which a
council hears evidence and makes public recommendations to the Prime Minister.
Of course, we must debate that process and the composition of the
council. The Bill should be noted for the following four points:
first, it creates a new honour that can be given posthumously.
Secondly, it creates a new process for the confirment of the honour, as it will
be known. Honours are normally conferred by the Crown as a perogative of the
Crown by using a process that is not as visible or as structured as the process
outlined in the Bill. However, although the Bill creates an honour -admittedly,
it is an unusual honour---the Crown's prerogative is preserved because the
Sovereign is still advised by the Prime Minister; the council's role is merely
recommendatory. Thirdly, the status of the honour is a combination of the
existing honours. It is a combination of the knighthood status of the kind that
leads to being included in an order with a role and the mere conferment of a
medal. Therefore the status of the exceptional service honour is between the
two. Fourthly, the Bill is somewhat controversial in that the honour is
created by Parliament rather than by the Crown. The inclusion of a council to
recommend who qualifies gives an input from a wider base and is more public
than the hidden process that is used through the Crown at present.
The composition of the council is the result of trying to ensure that wider
interests are represented. Those wider interests include the church, Maoridom,
academia through the universities, and the Human Rights Commissioner. That
council is recommended to be chaired by the Speaker of the House of
Representatives.
However, any other proposal on the composition of the council would be welcomed
and considered at the select committee stage. In conclusion I ask for the
support of members for this unusual Bill, which will be a small but
significant measure. Through the Bill we will be able to recognise and honour
those who have gone before. In so doing we will learn about and value our
past and those who have built our country. I have sought an honour for
Lieutenant Colonel MALONE for some time now, and I have looked through the
constitutional process that we have to do it---through posthumous Victoria
Cross awards and so on, which, in my view and in the view of many others
including 6ur own military historians, should have been awarded at the time.
However, the measure is a legitimate and constructive way of going about the
process, and I hope that I have the support of the House for the measure to be
considered by a select committee and reported back to the House.

on this man's achievements.

this man who married my father's aunt, and of the illustrious families of
his two wives, when I found a love letter he wrote to Ida on display at
Turnbull in 1991. An earlier article on him in the Post on 24.4.89

The discharged Soldiers Settlement Act provided for the rehabilitation of
Returned Servicemen on the land with the subdivisions of large sheep stations
for this purpose. One such area was the settlement of Ardkeen. The property,
a Crown lease formerly farmed by M NILSSON was sub divided into 18 sections
each of which had a separate homestead block of 40 acres on the main road to
Lake Waikaremoana.
Applicants invited to ballot for leasehold blocks after being subjected for
suitability, attended the ballot at Everybody's Hall in Wairoa on June 10
1920 and successful applicants gained thirty-threeyear leases with perpetual
right of renewal
for a further thirty-three year term. Settlers had the right to purchase the
freehold at the capital value mentioned in the lease.
Maurice Patrick MALONE was successful and received section 8 of 18.
The main farming sections were only accessible through designated stock roads
and involved a 3-4 hour horseback ride from the homestead blocks in many cases.
Most of the settlers, all single men at that stage, lived in tents later
constructing
corrugated iron whares on their main sections, in which to camp.
With few exceptions the farms had only boundary fences with no internal fences
or stockyards and normal farming activities such as shearing, dipping,
crutching and docking were major community operations with neighbours teaming
up to help each other.
Not every settler succeeded and Malone was one of these who was forced off
during the depression of the early thirties when the farmers in some cases had
to send money after their wool to pay for the sale and their stock. The stock
were scarcely worth selling in the sale yards for the prices they received. The
size of the farms was a seriously inhibiting factor in the settler’s
progress and the vacated properties were split up and used to expand the
surviving farms making them more viable. Malone’s farm became part sections
7, 9 and 10. The fact that the sacrifices of others helped their survival was
deeply regretted by the remaining settlers and was a grim reminder of their
wartime experiences.
Today’s Ardkeen Settlement is a far cry from the original station that was
subdivided in 1920, but it is a lasting testimony to those World War I soldiers
whose indomitable spirits were moulded in the crucible of the holocausts of
Gallipoli and France and having overcome all adversity in war, applied that
same spirit and comradeship to pioneering the land and heritage for the future.’
On 3.6.2007 these early settlers were acknowledged with the dedication of a
memorial plaque erected next to the Ardkeen Hall. M P MALONE is on that plaque.

A man named Maurice Patrick MALONE of Frasertown, who with his wife was on a
visit to Hastings, died there at Royston Hospital at 530am in peculiar
circumstances. The late Mr Malone was suffering from a common complaint, &
upon the advice of a Wairoa doctor, went to a Hastings chemist & bought a
prescribed ointment which was to be applied externally & another preparation of
narcotic properties to be injected. ...
His eldest brother left with the Main Body & was later killed in France;
[but 31 Edmond was killed in Turkey!]
the 2nd brother [32 Terence] was with the 1st landing contingent at Samoa;
he & his remaining brothers were wounded in Palestine & France respectively
while his only sister drove a motor ambulance in London.
After being invalided home he was under treatment for some time & on
demobilisation drew an allotment at Ardkeen, Frasertown, Wairoa. About 5 yrs
ago he married the 2nd dau'r of Dr TL PAGET late of Palmerston North. ...
The funeral took place at Hastings on Sunday. The pallbearers being his fellow

A soldier in the Scots Guard Regt, he was 1 of the 6 guards to the Nazi Deputy
Fuhrer Rudolph HESS, 1941. His diaries were destroyed but are quoted in David
IRVING's book "HESS-the mising years 1941-5" (1987) MacMillan.

W.W. LLEWELLIN's draft of Barney MALONE's obituary which was published in
The Times on January 6 1944, read:
Captain William Bernard (Barney) MALONE was marked out for death or glory.
His ardent admiration for his father Lieut-Colonel W G MALONE, killed in action
whilst in command of a New Zealand Battalion in Gallipoli during the last war,
was well known to all his friends. He read and reread his father's war
diaries; it was inevitable that he should take the challenge thrown out by the
declaration of war in 1939.
His aggressive persistence obtained from him his release for war service,
first amongst Borstal Housemasters.
He joined the borstal service in 1930 and found his feet at Lowdham grange,
the first borstal without walls; his choice as second in command of North Sea
camp, near Boston gave him his chance to use his great gifts of intellect, of
leadership and of driving force. Most of the ideas tried out in that
experiment were Barney's. His was the full and varied educational
programme which gave many a lad his first insights into the meaning of
citizenship. His was the founding of the troop of Sea Rovers, whose exciting
boat trips across the Wash gave an unexpected outlet for adventure for Borstal
lads. His was much else. The Housemaster at North Sea Camp lived no easy life,
for he worked, played and had meals with the lads, and fully shared their
lives. This involved real leadership; Barney never faltered; he inspired his
colleagues and the lads with his own shining faith and devotion.
Borstal progress owes much to him and would have owed more had he returned
after the war renewed with vigour and enthusiasm, his somewhat over critical
mind mellowed by experience.
Those who served with him have the memory of a loyal colleague and a friend
of noble ideals and the energy to translate his ideals into action, but
Barney's living memorial is in the lives of those lads - and those not a few -
whom he led along the road of life from carelessness and crime to usefulness
and happiness. They will remember him."

Tessa sent me this photo with her grandchildren 12.5.2015.
I was warmly welcomed when I visited her in her lovely home & garden.
From Clare: … Tessa was very accepting of her impending death. She was totally lucid, and funny. “I’ve beaten dementia”! When the priest came to give her the Last Rites, he said the Lord’s Prayer followed by a litany of saints at which point Tessa said something like “this doesn’t have to go on much longer does it?! Three of her children by her side tried not to laugh….. When she finally died with Leafy, Harry and Lol with her, she told them about Uncle Barney’s diary which she had had transcribed. Slowly she said “his diary is so…. soooo…. boring”. They all laughed and two seconds later Tessa took a couple of breaths and that was it. We all went to the hospital where she looked as if she was asleep. That evening 27 of us got together at her house and enjoyed a curry - toasting her with glasses of champagne. Tessa died peacefully and with tremendous dignity. She died just as she wanted.

Remembrance, a large white cross, against the round window on the 1st floor,

The Prime Minister, MPs & the top brass of the Army attended, as well as many
MALONEs, including Clare LYONS & Anita YOUNG who flew over from London for the occasion. After the unveiling, a service was held at the Cathedral, where another
plaque for WGM was installed about 2004. Then at the National Library, then PM & MPs & Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces again gave speeches at the launching of
"No Better Death, The Great War diaries and letters of William G MALONE"
edited by John CRAWFORD, the NZ Defence Force Historian, Reed, Auckland, 2005.
Clare LYONS notes: WGM was a very good photographer. He had a good eye, and I
have scanned over 200 of his First World War negatives, which I sent John on a CD.
The book contains a huge amount of material and photos of interest to the
family as well as historians of Gallipoli & WW1.

William Malone – our first pakeha New Zealander?
If you met Colonel William Malone today you probably wouldn’t like him much. His politics would be too right wing for you and he would come over as an authoritarian and straight-laced, humourless man who believed in Britain and its imperial role to lead and civilise the world by example. But that would be deceptive because there was a much more nuanced aspect to what he thought and believed and in fact he has a good claim to be the first pakeha New Zealand nationalist.
Who was he? The biographical facts about him are straightforward enough. As a nineteenth century immigrant to this country his story is a fairly common one although it varied somewhat from the mean. He was not, as many others were who came to New Zealand in the 1880s, a barely literate rural labourer, but was from London. He had grown up partly in France and spoke fluent French and was a competent pianist. He also had some military background as a previous member of the Westminster Rifle Volunteers. He had come to New Zealand not because of economic hardship but to join his brother who was a farmer in the Taranaki and almost immediately after his arrival he was one of the volunteers who joined the Armed Constabulary to invade Parihaka in 1881 and arrest Te Whiti and his followers. In 1892 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace and he became a qualified solicitor in 1894.
In 1903 he abandoned farming, although not from any lack of success, and set up in business in Hawera. He was twice an unsuccessful parliamentary candidate – as an “independent Liberal” he favoured the conversion of leasehold land to freehold, which was the great political controversy of the day and tells you that ultimately he was a political supporter of William Massey’s Reform Party which was eventually to emerge as the National Party in 1938. He raised and led a contingent to the South African War as a commissioned captain, and afterwards commanded the 4th Battalion of the Wellington and Taranaki Volunteers. It was he who introduced the famous ‘lemon squeezer’ hat in 1911. He also developed a fascination with military strategy and tactics which he studied over some fifteen years. It’s not surprising therefore that he was appointed to command the Wellington Battalion in 1914 when we went to war. His men initially didn’t like him. He trained them very hard while in Egypt, but when they got to Gallipoli in 1915 they changed their view because they realised they were much better equipped for real war than most of the other battalions, and that was a genuine matter of life and death.
There are also two things about him which make him stand out. The first is that he could have done quite well as a member of the middle classes if he’d stayed in England but he chose the path of adventure and adaptability in a new country. And it’s also clear that he didn’t have much time for fools. This tended to get him into hot water with his military superiors who included many people of that description, and especially with his Brigade Commander Colonel F E Johnston, who seems to have been a total nitwit, and more than once he had to be extricated from disputes with Johnston by Generals Godley and Birdwood who were the Division and Corps commanders. Interestingly they usually agreed with Malone and over-ruled Johnston.
I take it we are all aware that the Gallipoli campaign was a disaster. It was misconceived by politicians who wanted to assert pressure on Turkey and relieve the pressure on their Russian allies who were taking a hammering on the Eastern Front. Lord Kitchener, the Secretary for War in the Cabinet, opposed it as a military nonsense. And his appointment of Sir Ian Hamilton as overall commander is usually perceived as a first class mistake. Hamilton wasn’t entirely to blame for what happened. He had only a month to prepare and was so under supplied with the necessary requirements that he had no maps of the peninsula he was to invade that April and had to send his staff out to buy children’s atlases of the region. It’s not surprising that by August thousands of men had been killed and wounded and the troops were barely off the beaches. As an introduction to war on an industrial scale it was a chamber of horrors.
Hamilton thought, in the face of all the facts, that a last push would do it, apparently unaware that the Turks had rushed reinforcements onto the Peninsula and were well dug in with machine guns covering most lines of approach and were building up their batteries of howitzer artillery. They also had highly experienced German military advisors to assist their very competent commander Mustapha Kemal. The main advance would be at Suvla Bay and the Turks would be misled by feints at Lone Pine by the Australians and the New Zealanders at a ridge called Chunuk Bair. It was a disaster. The main attack at Suvla landed virtually unopposed and then instead of advancing inland the troops sat and did nothing for forty eight hours while their generals faffed about. The main commander on the ground, it should be noted, Major General Hammersley, had recently recovered from a nervous breakdown brought on by his inability to stand the sound of gunfire. Not the sort of person who would have been my first choice for field command. And ironic of course; many ordinary soldiers were executed out of hand after summary courts martial when they responded to prolonged bombardments in the same way.
Meanwhile the Australians at Lone Pine were massacred by the Turks firing over open machine gun sights as they tried to advance – you saw this disaster if you saw the film Gallipoli a couple of decades ago and in the more recent four part television series of the same name a few months ago. But probably what happened at Chunuk Bair was the most interesting of all.
First the Auckland Battalion advanced in daylight up what was almost a sheer cliff in the face of the Turks who were well dug in on the ridge above and supported by enfilading machine guns – that’s to say they could fire into the flanks of the New Zealand troops as they advanced. The result, predictably, was a massacre. Three hundred men were killed in minutes. Then it was supposed to be the turn of the Wellington Battalion and Johnston, who was probably by all accounts the worse for liquor, ordered them forward. We know what Malone thought about Johnston. A couple of months previously he’d written a note to his friend and colleague Colonel Richardson in which he castigated the Brigadier’s stupidity and said: “If it were not so serious it would be laughable.” And he went on to say that he wasn’t going to sacrifice his men to what he called “airy plunging, and disregard for the rules, and chance.” This was the testing moment.
According to a witness, Corporal Charlie Clark, Malone said: “My men are not going over in daylight – but they’ll go over at night time and they’ll take that hill. . . . . I will take the risk and any punishment. These men are not going until I order them to go. I’m not going to send them over to commit suicide.” And he ordered his men away from the ridge and into cover. Refusing an order in battle was a serious matter and Johnston was entitled in military law to shoot Malone and repeat his orders to the next in line. But the legend is that as he moved to draw his revolver a number of rifles also came up and pointed at him. So he thought better of it and sent for Godley, who as usual backed Malone and over-ruled Johnston.
Malone turned out to be right. The following morning, 8 August, at 1.00 am the Battalion crept up the hill under cover of night, and with barely a casualty they swept the Turks off the ridge and dug in. It was the furthest forward any Allied troops penetrated in the whole campaign. When the sun came out the men from Wellington could see the Bosporus glittering the in distance and beyond it the objective – Istanbul/ Constantinople. Although holding Chunuk Bair would in itself not have won the campaign, the Turks saw the danger and threw everything they had into counter attacks over the next two days. The result was inevitable. Of the 760 men who advanced to capture the heights 70 came down. Among the dead was Malone, 54 years of age, who had advanced with his men. Ironically it’s most likely that he was killed by supporting heavy gunfire from naval vessels in the bay below, which fell short and landed on the New Zealand position.
The failure to reinforce the New Zealanders and hold the position has been described by Chris Pugsley, our leading military historian, as the great lost opportunity of the Gallipoli campaign. Certainly it adds a new chapter to the bungling of the generals which characterises that campaign – and the whole Allied war effort for that matter. On the Western front someone on the German side remarked that the British fought like lions, to which General Ludendorf is reported to have retorted: “That’s true. But luckily for us they’re led by donkeys,” causing the historian A J P Taylor to call his classic study of the Allied command in the First World War The Donkeys.
Astonishingly, the official version has always claimed that Chunuk Bair was lost because Malone had sited his defensive trenches at the wrong angle, based on General Hamilton’s official report on the failed attack at Suvla and his attempts to excuse his overall failure. This is of a piece with general policy of the day which ruled that no-one above battalion command level was ever to be blamed in reports for a failure. So Malone carried the can. He should have been recommended for a decoration but he wasn’t. No doubt his reputation for general defiance of stupid orders and Johnston in particular didn’t help. Nor did the policy of General Russell, the Divisional commander who refused in most cases to recommend officers for VCs on the grounds that heroism was a normal expectation of those with commissioned rank. He also applied a strict quota system when endorsing recommendations for decorations irrespective of what had actually happened on the ground. Of the six men recommended for VCs at Chunuk Bair only one – stretcher bearer Cyril Basset - received one. It always embarrassed him. All my mates at Chunuk Bair also got crosses he was later credited with saying – but theirs were made of wood. Like the heads of the generals I daresay.
So why should we celebrate Colonel William Malone? Because of his rejection of what has become known as ‘the colonial cringe’. He was not prepared to blindly follow the orders of British generals and their New Zealand counterparts on the ground. Instead he demanded a reason for doing something if he saw that the consequences would be disastrous. A refusal to accept that blind obedience to the orders of their betters was one of the reasons why men like Malone – and my ancestors and probably yours – emigrated here in the first place and began to build a new society which was not driven by class privilege. The Rev Ormond Burton, who had been a stretcher bearer on Chunuk Bair, and who was our most renowned pacifist in World War Two (and went to gaol for it), once said that ‘how men were to die on Chunuk Bair was determined largely by how the men and women lived on the farms and in the towns of New Zealand.” It was not a case of, as one fatuous later politician was to describe Gallipoli as “the place where we showed that New Zealanders could die like Englishmen”. There’s no merit in such a thing. It was instead the place where we began to find our identity as not-Englishmen, and Malone deserves full credit for being one of the first to put his hand up for that.
And there’s an interesting foot note to Chunuk Bair. In the course of the twenty four years that he served in Parliament the Alliance and Progressive leader Jim Anderton waged a sixteen year campaign to get some sort of recognition for Malone’s achievement. Jim was to say later that this was the hardest fought battle of all the battles he fought in his political career. As a member of his staff who played a minor part in this I can confirm that the opposition of the military establishment to any such recognition had to be experienced to be believed, even almost a century later. Among those in uniform only the Wellington Territorial Regiment, for obvious reasons, backed him to the hilt. His efforts earned him salutes on Anzac Day in Wellington. But it took the combined efforts of Jim as a senior Cabinet Minister, the Clerk of the House David McGee, and Speaker Margaret Wilson, a number of false starts, and literally years of hard graft to get a small brass plaque commemorating Malone and his heroism installed in the House alongside the large oil painting of the Turkish counter attack at Chunuk Bair which has also hung in the corridor near the chamber for many years.
As the recent decision to reintroduce knighthoods maybe illustrates, the shade of Brigadier Johnston haunts us still and we have some distance yet to go before we can exorcise it and rid ourselves of the colonial cringe.

letters to his wife Ida. Lots of VIPs. I sat next to Mayor Celia at the
breakfast. Clare LYONS & Anita YOUNG flew over from London for the occasion.
Not to be missed is the mock-up of his bunker and his letters with his wife Ida.

I understand that you are a relative of the very well known and respected Leutenant-Colonel William MALONE who led the Wellington Battalion. Both men were killed on 8th/9th August 1915 near Chunuk Bair, along with hundreds of other New Zealanders.. his brother Corporal Clive STATHAM, who was also in the Otago Battalion and was killed 8/9th August 1915. There is a stained glass window in the Otago Cathedral dedicated to Frank and Clive STATHAM.. Frank and Clive were the brothers of Sir Charles STATHAM ...

Colonel John R MALONE's mansion at Barronstown was burned to the ground on the
night of May 13. Many valuable paintings, the result of years of patient
collect on the part of Col. MALONE, as well as many fine pieces of sculpture &
articles of value, were fortunately rescued. Barronstown, County Westmouth,
the seat of the MALONE family, is associated with various memories in the
legal, political & literary history. Richard MALONE, the 1st owner of
Barronstown, was an eminent lawyer who made a great fortune at the irish Bar
in the early decades of the 18th century. [His] eldest son, Anthony MALONE
of Barronstown, was Prime Sergeant at the Irish Bar from 1740 to 1754, &
Chancellor of the Exchequer in Ireland 1757-1761. He was pre-eminent while at
the Bar, & in the Irish House of Commons. His 2nd brother, Richard MALONE, was
2nd Sergeant at law, & the youngest brother, Edmond, was a Justice of the Irish
Court of Common Pleas. Mr Justice MALONE was the father of Edmond MALONE,
the renowned Shakespearian editor & critic. He too was a member of the Irish Bar.
